GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - At first glance, a new housing project on Switzer Road in Gulfport looks like a typical apartment complex. Actually, it's anything but typical.
Baywood Seniors Apartment Homes is the result of a private public partnership that controls the cost of rent. Developers are able to take advantage of lucrative tax credits while working with the South Mississippi Housing and Development Corporation. The corporation is a division of the Region 8 Housing Authority.
Baywood is an example of how traditional public housing is changing.
"We're updating our entire inventory so it compares to what you'll find in the open market," said Jessie Billups from SMHD.
Residents must be at least 55, and can not earn more than 60 percent of Harrison County's median income. A single person making $18,150, or a couple earning $20,700 would pay only $377 a month for a one bedroom unit. The cost for a two bedroom apartment would be $450.
Baywood Seniors Apartment Homes features 72 units. It's currently 51 percent occupied.
