Sisters With Purpose wants to spend money and time with the abused

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Sisters With Purpose held their annual "Celebration of Excellence" brunch in Gulfport on Saturday. Members say the non-profit organization started three years ago to help abused women and children.

This year Sisters With Purpose has donated to abuse and homeless shelters in Mississippi and Georgia. Now members says they want to volunteer more to better understand the needs of the women and children staying in the shelters.

Velma Johnson is one of the group's founders.

"It means more to those kids that have been neglected, when you go there and you spend time with them, read to them or you walk those babies," Johnson said. "I think that is a lot more than just sending them toys. They like that, but I think they appreciate the quality time a lot better. "

Sisters With Purpose also awarded two college scholarships to recent Biloxi High graduates.
