Ocean SPRINGS, MS (WLOX)- Sergeant Calvin Robertson is constantly pulling dozens of people over for blatantly ignoring the speed limit on the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge. Robertson said he's fed up about the growing speeding problem.
"The speed limit is 45, and you catch a lot of motorists doing 70, 75. We have caught some in the triple digits," Robertson said.
The excessive speeding is also frustrating to Captain William Jackson. Jackson is over the traffic division, and he said motorists are using the bridge as a race track.
"You have 50 feet of bridge that is unprotected and pedestrians walking on the bridge," Jackson said. "You can lose control of your vehicle, and you can cause a fatality."
Captain Jackson said if people don't believe speeding on the bridge is getting out of hand, the large number of tickets issued proves it. Since January, police have ticketed 2041 drivers.
"Two Friday nights ago, the five us were running radar on this bridge and we wrote 117 tickets, had three DUI arrests, and one felony arrest on this bridge alone."
To put the brakes on speeding, police plan to increase patrols on the bridge and in the city more, especially this 4th of July weekend.
"This holiday we are going to be working around the clock," Jackson said.
"We are here to keep the public safe on the highway, and we don't want any accidents," Robertson said.
Ocean Springs Police are warning anyone who will be driving on bridge from now on to stop the speeding.
"Just slow down."
