GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Just months after completing a multi-million dollar renovation, the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport will soon take on a new project. Work will soon begin on a new covered walkway.

"When passengers are out in the parking garage, they are out of the weather and right now we don't have a covered connector back to the terminal building and if it happens to be raining they get wet," said Airport director Bruce Frallic.

Frallic says plans are underway for a new covered walkway and a sky walk.

It's a project that's been in the works for years.

"We really wanted to do this covered walkway under the terminal project but because of our additional expenses due to Katrina we couldn't do that," said Frallic. "We had to wait awhile."

Frank Genzer and architects from Gresham Smith designed the project.

Phase one includes the covered walkway.Phase two consists of a skywalk that links travelers from the parking garage to the terminal building.

Architects say it will be a seamless design that will be an added bonus for travelers.

"We're designing the walkway to support an enclosed space in the future," said Genzer.

"It's nice to give people a place to be covered but then to have to walk across a wet street is not the best service so the airport is looking to provide a better opportunity and a better experience for the passenger," said Jane Ahrens with Gresham Smith & Partners.

Airport leaders say funding for the one million dollar project is already in place and the covered walkway should be open for travelers by the start of next year.
