Trooper discrimination battle continues

JACKSON, MS. (AP) - Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson says he hasn't rejected federal officials' offer to begin talks to reach an agreement over racial discrimination complaints made by his agency's black troopers. Simpson says he won't agree to conciliation until he gets more details from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on its conclusions that discriminatory practices existed within the Highway Patrol.

Simpson said he wants his agency can conduct its own investigation. Wilma Scott, head of the Mississippi EEOC office, didn't return a call seeking comment. Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi NAACP, was out of town and couldn't be reached for comment. The NAACP filed the complaint on behalf of the troopers.
