Moss Point students learn the importance of good manners

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - Some young ladies are learning proper etiquette during a three week summer course by the Moss Point Visionary Circle mentor group.

"We want you beautiful young ladies to be polished pearls," mentor Ada Collier said.

Collier's goal is to teach the teens good manners.

"It is not about having the money, because a lot of them think, If I have the money, I can make it and I can be out there," Collier said. "It is about having the foundation, and that is good manners. And that is how you are going to make it."

Visionary Circle members started the etiquette class because they saw many young women who didn't know how to carry themselves in public, or communicate effectively.

"I don't want them coming up saying, 'My name is Shaquetta.' I wanted them to stand up and say, 'Good morning. My name is Shaquetta,' and from there we build on."

During the three week program, the girls were also educated on the do's and don'ts of dating, the importance of personal hygiene and proper table manners.

"The biggest thing is putting your elbows on the table," Collier said.

These etiquette tips have already rubbed off on Aaliyah Molden and Jennifer Wallace. Both admit they thought the class was going to be just another boring lecture, but they ended up learning how to act more like a lady and how to dress for success.

"Manners are really important to get jobs and scholarships for later on life," Wallace said.

"When you go somewhere, you don't want to wear short shorts or too tight clothes. You have to think about what you are wearing, and who you are going to be with when you are wearing it," Molden said.

Collier hopes the girls will carry these lessons with them for the rest of their lives.
