Budget Stalemate

In the past several years, our state lawmakers have been called into scores of special sessions, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. And now, it has happened once again. Legislators failed to reach an agreement on a state budget during the three month long regular session. And so they must meet in Jackson later this month to hammer out an agreement by the July 1st deadline.

Meanwhile, dozens of state agencies and school districts are in limbo, not knowing how much money is coming in, and not being able to plan their own budgets. This, because lawmakers once again failed to do their jobs in the allotted time frame. This is not acceptable. And in tight economic times, Mississippi residents will have to foot the bill for yet another special session to the tune of almost 40-thousand dollars a day.

We elect senators and representatives to do a job, and when they fail to complete the task, it's time to let them know.. We can do better than this.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
