Saucier Man Dies In Shootout

A Saucier man is dead after exchanging gunfire with a Harrison County Sheriff's deputy. It started around 11 Thursday morning when 40-year-old Robert Carnley checked his son out of Saucier Elementary School. Authorities say the man's sister-in-law called police, saying he had threatened to harm himself and the10-year-old child.

Sheriff's deputies located the man's vehicle on Scarborough Road in Harrison County and followed it to his residence. Deputies say when they confronted the man, he again threatened the boy's life. Deputies say the man then started shooting at them. That's when they returned fire. Carnley died during the shootout.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove says the autopsy report shows Carnley died of a gunshot wound. The case will go before a grand jury.

The child was not harmed and handed over to family members. The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Harrison County District Attorney's office are investigating the incident.
