Artist recycles Katrina damaged trees into furniture

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The roar of a chainsaw echoes through the woods and marshes of Hancock County. David "Cairo" Wheeler transforms logs damaged by Katrina into what he calls "organic furniture."

"I never buy wood. I pick it out of a ditch or pull it off the beach," Wheeler said.

David Wheeler makes tables, chairs and beds out of primarily cedar and cypress.

His home and studio were washed away by Katrina's storm surge.

"It was terrible. Everything was obliterated," Wheeler said.

Now the storm that took so much from him, is fueling his inspired organic furniture and one of a kind sculptures.

You can see David "Cairo" Wheeler's work at the 220 Gallery on Main Street in Old Town Bay St. Louis.
