DELISLE, MS (WLOX) - Desks, chairs, file cabinets and bookcases are being loaded up onto a trailer, bound for Leake County. In all, more than 1,000 pieces of furniture are on their way to several schools in south and central Mississippi.
"We have some excess televisions, computers, things of that nature. We're just glad to see somebody that can use it," said Ronnie Storey, Director of Support Services for the Pass Christian School District.
The used furniture and equipment belong to the Pass Christian School District. Most of them came from generous donors from all over the country, after Hurricane Katrina devastated schools in the Pass.
"It's a great feeling," Storey said. "We knew how great it felt when they helped us, when we had absolutely nothing and furniture showed up."
Now that two Pass Christian schools are moving to new buildings and one school is being rebuilt, the district no longer needs the surplus furniture.
"You just pay it forward. That's the only way that it will ever work. If someone's good to you, you just be as good as you can to other people," Storey said.
So this week, representatives from the Leake County School District picked up several hundred items. The George County School District received 200 donated desks and chairs. Greene County schools also received 336 pieces of furniture.
"We're grateful," said Green County School Superintendent Richard Fleming. "Sometimes, what do they say 'Someone else's garbage is a treasure' or something like that? So that's kind of like it is for us. We're just happy to get them."
The donations involve more than just furniture and equipment. For instance, the Scott County School District received four portable classrooms, along with aluminum canopies and several air conditioning units.
"We want them to have that connection with us," Storey said. "They helped us when we needed it. We're going to pay it back."
Ten portable classrooms in the Pass Christian School District are also up for bids at low-cost to school districts. The units come with some furniture.
