MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - Smiles and laughter filled the Moss Point Recreational Center Tuesday as kids relaxed and had a good time on their summer break.

"It is fun," camper Gabriel Jackson said as he practiced shooting hoops.

The eighth grader admits he first thought the River City Summer Camp was going to be a dull place to hangout.

"I came here this morning and I thought it was going to be boring. But after that, we started having fun and playing basketball," Jackson said.

But the camp isn't all fun and games.

"Our motto is have fun while you learn," Recreational Director Donna Joseph said.

Joseph said the kids will have weekly lessons to keep their mental juices flowing. Tuesday's lesson was about saying no to drugs.

"We also want to offer a learning experience. We feel it is important for them to stay brushed up on the math, and the reading and science," Joseph said.

The camp counselors will also focus on improving the kids' computer skills.

"We want to make sure we incorporate as much technology in our program. We will have computer sessions where they will be doing projects and computers games."

Joseph is confident that once camp is over, the young people will leave better prepared for next school year.
