PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - The Pascagoula Police Department is investigating a Sunday morning traffic accident that took the lives of two men and sent a third man to the hospital. The two-car collision happened around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 90 and Chicot Road.

Authorities say 40-year-old Orlando Pereira Martinez of Gautier was traveling westbound on Highway 90 when his BMW struck a Saturn Coupe that was attempting to cross the intersection.

Emergency personnel from Pascagoula Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance Service had to use the Jaws of Life to free the occupants of the Saturn. The driver and the front seat passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene. The back seat passenger was extracted and taken to Singing River Hospital. No word on his condition.

Officers say Martinez was not injured during the collision. He is currently being held at the Pascagoula Municipal Jail awaiting an initial appearance. Martinez is charged with two counts of felony D.U.I. causing death.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to call the Pascagoula Police Department at (228) 762-2211.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
