BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A Memorial Day ceremony in Biloxi Saturday honored those Mississippians wounded in combat. The Military Order of the Purple Hearth Chapter 676 held a ceremony at the Purple Heart monument.
The tribute included a wreath laying, prayers, poems and more. Members say having been wounded in battle creates a strong bond among Purple heart recipients.
"We did share the same experiences. We know how important life is now," said Joseph Balanovich. "Before life was life, but now it's got a real new meaning to us. We get out of bed every day and thank God that we got out of bed. Some of us are wounded a lot more than people realize even though it don't show between mental and physical."
During the ceremony participants also read the names of all Mississippi Purple Heart recipients who died in the past year.
