GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Commissioner Leonard Bentz of the Mississippi Public Service Commission announced that after review of Mississippi Power Co., Inc.'s Performance Evaluation Plan (PEP), that no increase will be approved at this time.

"I have suspended the rate increase filing pertaining to the PEP plan for Mississippi Power Co. for the remainder of 2009. Mississippi Power Co. customers could have seen as much as a 3 percent increase in their rates if I had approved this filing," Bentz said.

"In this economic downturn, it is important that each ratepayer have every advantage that they can when paying necessary bills such as their utilities," Bentz said. "Not allowing this increase for the reminder of 2009 is going to help the people of Mississippi and that is what I am here for."

Mississippi Power spokesperson Cindy Duvall told WLOX News, "The company supports the decision of the Commission to suspend PEP for 2009. We want our customers to know that we intend to continue to provide the best customer service and highest reliability possible."

Consumers may contact Commissioner Leonard Bentz's office at 1-800-356-6429 with any questions regarding a utility or the No-Call List.
