GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - South Mississippians came out to honor our Seabees Saturday afternoon. Thousands of people came out for Seabee Day 2009. The free event celebrates the Navy Seabees and their service to our community.

There were plenty of activities for the entire family, not to mention vendors, food and music. Many of the rides and activities were free to everyone who attended.

Lt. Joe Charles was the Seabee Day 2009 coordinator.

"These are the community's seabees and we really wanted to show them how much we do for them, and how much they do for us and support us," Lt. Charles said. "It's really a win-win situation for both parties. We couldn't do it without the community, and this is a way to show them that and to show them what we do."

Saturday's celebration included performances from former American Idol finalists Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey.

Our very own Rebecca Powers and the Myles Sharp Band also performed at this year's event while Carrie Duncan was the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Organizers estimated close to 10,000 people attended this family event.
