BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - After 11 seasons of ECHL hockey South Mississippi lost the Mississippi Sea Wolves but hasn't lost professional hockey. Local hockey fans can now turn their attention to a new team.
The official announcement was made Thursday afternoon at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. A local investment group, Coast Hockey L.L.C., stepped up and secured a franchise with the Southern Professional Hockey League.
A number of Sea Wolves fans turned out for the news conference. The owners include former Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby and former Sea Wolves goalie Chuck Thuss. Since the ECHL won't release the Sea Wolves name, Walby, the new hockey team head coach and general manager, says you the fans, can name the team.
"We need to have an identity, obviously. The name on the front of our jersey is going to be way more important than the name on the back of the jersey," Steffon Walby said. "We need you guys to help us find the right name for the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the professional hockey team entering this next season in the SPHL."

Walby hopes to have the team name by June and the winning entry will receive two season tickets.
