BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi is one of the few states that has a specially designed command center that can respond to any emergency and provide medical care. It's called Mississippi Med-1. The portable hospital can be set up on the front lines of a disaster.
"The beauty of Med-1 is that it is an all hazards facility," Emergency Management Coordinator Pamela Hemphill said.
That means the facility could be used in the event of a swine flu pandemic having an impact on Mississippi.
"It's like taking a hospital off the concrete and moving it to the field," Hemphill said.
At full capacity, Med-1 is a 100 bed medical facility with all the modern medical equipment and communication systems that connect local, state and federal authorities.
Mississippi Med-1 can be set up in a matter of hours and provides emergency service for the first 72 hours of a disaster.
According to Hemphill, "This decreases the response time and increases the chances of saving lives."
