PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A would-be burglar is dead after an attempted break-in turned deadly at Granada Apartments on Chicot St. in Pascagoula. Police say Javorous Darnell Tims was attempting to enter a first floor unit at Grenada Apartments on Chicot Street around 1:00 a.m., when a woman inside woke up. Police say the woman called for her adult son, who fired shots at Tims in self defense.
"Two shots were fired, one went into the window frame, the other one into the man," said Susan French, property manager at Granada Apartments.
Police said Tims ran eight hundred yards, then fell to the ground. They said when they found him, he was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. Police said they believe Tims was unarmed.
Police aren't releasing the names of the people in the apartment, but the property manager says they're long time residents with a good history at the complex.
"The lady works real hard, I think she works a couple of jobs, and she stays pretty much to herself," said French.
Another neighbor described them as "good people."
Most of the neighbors at Granada apartments said they are surprised to hear the news. Residents and managers said the apartment complex had a reputation for crime years ago, but thanks to their new policy of running criminal background checks on tenants, its cleaned up over the years. They hardly ever hear about crime here anymore.
James McMillan has lived at the complex for eight years. He heard shots last night, and he called the police when he saw a body lying on the ground. He said he thought the person on the ground had passed out, because he's never heard of any crime in the neighborhood.
"Nothing like that ever happens out here," he said. "It's fairly quiet out here."
Police and apartment officials agree that this type of crime is rare for the area. Police are still investigating, but said all indications are the shot was self defense. They said they aren't charging anyone. The case will be presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury.
"You have a right to defend yourself," said Lieutenant Davy Davis with the Pascagoula Police Department. "And if you have the means to defend yourself, by all means you need to do that. Especially when somebody's coming in and potentially assaulting your mother. At this time, we're looking at this as a justifiable homicide."
Still Neighbors said the death is a tragedy.
"I'm sorry for you know, that was somebody's son," French said. "You know, there's a grieving family out there somewhere. I feel for them."
Police said Tims had a criminal history, but didn't release any details.
