GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's a celebration that's been six years in the making. On Thursday, Governor Haley and First Lady Marsha Barbour, Chef Emeril Lagasse and his wife Alden cut the ribbon on a new $3.2 million WINGS Performing Arts and Education Center at Lynn Meadows Discovery Center.
"It will allow us to do so many exciting things," board member E.A. Allen said.
The center features expanded office space and classrooms and a state of the art kitchen.
Lagasse, a world famous celebrity chef and restaurant owner, and his wife Alden, who was a close friend of Lynn Meadows, were the driving force behind the effort to bring the facility to life.
"It's so important to the community and the children," Lagasse said.
The couple hosted several big fundraisers and the state committed money to the cause.
Phase four is next. It will renovate the auditorium at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center to make the dream of producing first class theater productions a reality.
