Chambers award $20,000 in college scholarships

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Some of the brightest minds in Biloxi and Gulfport were recognized Tuesday morning when Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College hosted the annual Excellence in Education awards breakfast.

Nineteen high school students received more than $20,000 in scholarships for their accomplishments in the classroom.

College scholarships were granted to well-rounded students that demonstrate participation and leadership in school, church and community; meaningful work experience; active engagement in hobbies and other interests; attainment of academic excellence; and the need for financial assistance to pursue a higher education.

Fourteen teachers were also given chamber awards for their innovative approaches as educators.

Educators in Gulfport and Biloxi were nominated by administration, fellow teachers and parents for making an outstanding contribution to enhance education during the 2008-2009 school year. Awards were given in individual categories to teachers in the various school districts throughout both cities.
