JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Sheriff's deputies in Florida are trying to determine if a man killed by officers Saturday morning is the same person suspected in a 2008 murder in Gautier.

The St. John's County Sheriff's office say deputies shot and killed a man who was inside a vehicle registered to Rodney Lasseigne.  Authorities say like Lasseigne, the dead man is a white male in his fifties, but there has been no identity confirmation.

Lasseigne is wanted in the 2008 beating death of his mother, Juanita Gibson, in her home in Gautier. In December, his profile was featured on the television show America's Most Wanted.

On Saturday, deputies approached a vehicle with a tag matching Lasseigne at a truck stop off Interstate-95 in Florida.  They say they tried to get the man's attention and noticed he was covered in a blanket.  Deputies say when he pulled back the blanket, he pointed a sawed-off shot gun at officers.  The officers then fired on the man.

Again, St. John's County deputies have yet to confirm the man as Rodney Lasseigne.  A task force officer with U.S. Marshal's Gulfport office says a medical examiner should have a confirmation of identification by Monday.
