Moss Point's New Chief Ready To Mend Fences

Gulfport Detective Michael Ricks is working on his last cases with the department. Ricks says he's looking forward to starting his new position as Chief of Police in Moss Point.

"I think it's going to be a good adventure for me and my family. And I think it's going to be a good adventure for Moss Point," Michael Ricks said.

But he says he's going to take this adventure one step at a time.

"I just want to make an assessment to start off. I can't identify what needs to be done until I know what the problem is," Ricks said.

One problem Ricks is aware of is the community's lack of trust in the department, after the Marcus Malone case. It's a problem he says he's dealt with before as Police Chief in Tuskegee, Alabama. He says the key to addressing the issue is good communication.

"Just by being out into the community creating different type of town meetings and giving an opportunity for the citizens to speak also gave us the opportunity to mend relationships," Ricks said.

Creating a good relationship is part of Ricks' vision for the department, and he hopes to put it into focus when takes office next month.
