Ocean Springs High Junior ROTC squad earns top inspection score

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS  (WLOX) -  They received the highest score in their school's history.

Members of the Junior ROTC at Ocean Springs High were recognized during a ceremony Wednesday morning.

The recently scored a remarkable 599 points out of a possible 600 on their inspection.

"They do drill and ceremonies. They're evaluated on leadership questions and academic requirements. The formal inspection is more or less our accreditation of the program to make sure we're in compliance with cadet command requirements plus state requirements for academics," said Col. Steven Farragut, the group's commander.,

That mark is the highest in the 26 year history of the group. It's also the best mark in the state of Mississippi this year. Cadets were pinned with special gold stars to mark their achievement.

About 100 students participate in the ROTC program at Ocean Springs High.  The formal inspection process takes place every three years.

School superintendent Dr. Robert Hirsch, praised the cadets for their dedication, hard work and citizenship.
