D'Iberville could get new health clinic within year

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's the one question Joe Dawsey say as executive director for Coastal Family Health, he gets all the time.

"Everyone's always asking me about the D'Iberville clinic and why we're not open," said Dawsey.

Dawsey says the clinic hasn't opened for one primary reason.

"Money to finish the building, as most would guess.  I'm working on getting extra funding to finish the building," said Dawsey.

Dawsey expects to find those funds to sooner than later.

He said "I'm hoping to do it this year.  I know it's April already and it's really quick.  But, I do have an architect, and we're ready to bid part of it out.  Once we start, I think it will move quickly."

D'Iberville has never had a Coastal Family Health Clinic.  The clinic allows patients without coverage to pay based on income.   About 37 percent of Mississippians are uninsured according to Coastal Family Health.  With people losing their jobs and a tightening economy, Dawsey says opening the clinic by year's end is becoming a more critical issue.

"Our patient load is increasing due to the number of people without insurance; we're at full capacity," said Dawsey.

With a new clinic scheduled to come on-line by the end of the year, Dawsey says the uninsured and under-insured will have a better chance of seeing a doctor when needed.

"In the future, we'll be able to see many more people."
