OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The late Laurent Smith might be the most talented painter you've never heard of.
Smith's incomparable oil landscapes are being featured at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs. It's the first time Smith's work has been shown.
"His depth and use of shadow and light are amazing," Museum Director Gayle Petty Johnson said.
Smith painted images from Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and coastal Mississippi. Some of his subjects from South Mississippi were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, so the show has historic value.
Smith's son, Gary Spencer Smith, rescued his father's art from Katrina's storm surge by moving paintings to the second floor of his Bay St. Louis home.
A Retrospective of the Art of the late Laurent Smith is on display at the Walter Anderson Museum of art through May 30th.
