OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The recovery effort after Hurricane Katrina presented some challenges and some opportunities. The challenges have come in the area of affordable housing. The opportunities have been to create neighborhoods and developments using innovative concepts.

Cottage Square on Government Street in Ocean Springs is a mixed use project that combines Katrina cottages designed after the storm and Mississippi cottages developed by MEMA. The MEMA cottages are residential units and all eight are already occupied.

"It's a good opportunity to show our cultural background with cottage style housing and it's affordable," architect Bruce Tolar said.

Retail shops and businesses are in the Katrina cottages. Tolar thinks projects like Cottage Square may begin appearing all along the coast.
