GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Thanks to a seatbelt, one man escaped from what police say would have been a deadly crash. The wreck involved two cars and happened shortly after two in the afternoon off Highway 90 in Gulfport.
Police on site say a silver Mustang and another car somehow made contact as they headed west on Highway 90. The driver of the Mustang then hit the concrete divider on 90, slid to the other side of the road, hit a curb and spun several times before hitting a retainer wall off Midway Avenue.
The other car also hit the divider, spun a few times and went backwards up a hill where it eventually stopped.
Michael Hewitt saw the crash as it unfolded from the eastbound lane on Highway 90.
"I just knew I was going to walk up on a dead person. I was hoping and praying I didn't, and thank God I didn't today," Hewitt said.
Hewitt went to the car following the crash to keep the driver alert until emergency officials arrived on the scene.
The 18-year-old driver was taken to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. There's no word on the extent of his injuries. The two people in the other car were not hurt. Police say speed was likely a factor in the wreck.
