Jackson County Civil Defense: Alabama opened a flood gate

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -Alabama has opened a flood gate to relieve heavy flooding.

Jackson County Civil Defense Director Donald Langham says Mobile County officials called around mid-morning Saturday saying they'd opened one gate on Big Creek Lake by 10 feet.

Langham says the water release is necessary to prevent a dam from failing.

He says while the opening of the gate may be adding somewhat to the flooding problem in Jackson County, the main cause is the overflow of the Escatawpa River.
