No doubt when you think of Biloxi you mainly think of two things: gaming and military. Our various casinos are facing a tough time, but we are confident they will rebound as our economy comes back. Keesler Air Force Base appears to be healthy and doing a great job as a training base. In the past Biloxi was also touted as a tourist town with a number of sites to see. However, Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of those sites.
This week we were encouraged as Biloxi leaders took a step in creating a museum district on the beach front in east Biloxi. The George Ohr Museum is underway and will become a major tourist draw for the city. Having a new Seafood, Katrina and a Mardi Gras Museum right next door to the Ohr Museum would really enhance Biloxi's reputation as a tourism destination.
Sure money is a problem right now. But we are confident in a few years we will look back at the museum idea and tout it as the project that brought tourists back to Biloxi. The project calls for a lot of cooperation and out of the box fund raising ideas. But if the community gets behind this project we know it will succeed.
