BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A project on Highway 90 near the 1-110 loop is rising out of the ruin of Katrina. The old Gulf Towers apartment complex was inundated by water from the storm and a development group stepped in to buy the property and convert it into an upscale hotel.

Lodging Leisure Development group is spending 35 million dollars to build the new 195 room Four Points Sheraton Hotel.

"In the next couple of weeks, we'll be down to furniture and fixtures," developer Granville Smith said.

The Four Points is scheduled to open in June. The new hotel will feature a restaurant, a bar and meeting space.

The company is seizing the opportunity to capitalize on a need to restore South Mississippi's inventory of hotel rooms lost in the storm.

"Now that the condo market has gone soft, we think it's important to bring more hotel rooms to the coast," Smith said.

Lodging Leisure Development is looking at other properties around South Mississippi for future hotel developments.
