Wizard Of Oz On Stage

One of America's all time favorite films can be seen on stage this weekend. KNS productions presents The Wizard of Oz at the Saenger Theatre in Biloxi. All your favorite characters come to life on stage in this family classic.

16 year old Biloxi high school junior Jacqueline Coale plays Dorothy. She says, "It's so exciting to play Dorothy, a character everybody loves. It's really a dream come true."  It's not surprising to learn that her favorite song in the show is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

Dorothy's adventure begins with a tornado in Kansas that sends her family to a storm shelter while she takes the ride of her life!  Loree Dalgo is artistic director and choreographer for this KNS production. She says they worked hard to create the same kind of feeling on stage, people are familiar with in the film.

"We start off in black and white.and go to color, and there area lot of special effects we had to put in like the movie."

The tornado takes Dorothy and her faithful companion Toto over the rainbow to the colorful land of Oz. A cast of 105, many of them munchkins, join Dorothy on stage.

There's plenty of action behind the scenes too.  With so many cast members, and extravagant make up and costumes,  make up artist Ron Parker works furiously to keep up.

Of course it wouldn't be Oz without Dorothy's three sidekicks.  Dan Garner plays the Lion, Tony Thomas the Scarecrow, and Kevin Dyess the tin man.  Kevin says "it's the most fun I've had in a long time, even though it gets hot in the costumes and makeup."

Dalgo has a lot of praise for the entire cast and says, "I think everybody's going to fall in love with these characters,  just like they did in the movie, they make magic on stage".

It's magical fun for the whole family. The Wizard of Oz is this weekend only at the Saenger Theatre in Biloxi, with performances Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m and Sunday at 2 p.m.
