Text warning of Wal-Mart shooting a rumor

By WLOX Staff

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A text message about a gang initiation at Wal-mart has some people worried, despite being a long running urban legend.

We've received numerous phone calls in the WLOX Newsroom from viewers who received the disturbing text messages. But police, as well as Wal-Mart's corporate office in Bentonville, AR say the message is phony, and is apparently similar to previous mass-messaging campaigns.

Kelly Cheeseman, Manager of Wal-Mart's Corporate Media Relations, released a statement saying, "The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. We are aware of the message being circulated and are working with local authorities to enhance our security efforts at our stores in the area. While we take these types of situations seriously, we regard this as being only a rumor, much like similar rumors that have circulated via e-mail in previous years."

According to the myth-busting website Snopes.com, the rumors began surfacing in emails in July 2005. Click here to read more about how this rumor has evolved over years.
