Pascagoula Library Prepares To Reopen After Katrina

"This is four feet of sheet rock that has just been put in. We had to have four feet taken out of the main floor of the library, and we had to take out all our carpet," Branch Manager Carol Mars says.

Pascagoula Library is starting to look like its old self these days. Water from Katrina caused severe damage inside the building. The library lost everything on the bottom floor.

"We received three feet of water in our mechanical room that housed our chillers and boilers, and we were without air."

But the set back didn't discourage Branch Manager Carol Mars and her staff.

"Eventually we will have our carpet. And we'll put in shelving so that we can put the books on the shelves and open back to the public."

Mars expects the building to be finished by January. Escatawpa resident Charlotte Harris says she's counting down to opening day.

"They have a Family History Department and Genealogy. I like to do studies on that and I can not find it any other place. "

Harris, who came to library for the annual book fair, says the reopening will be beneficial to people of all ages.

"I am looking forward to the opening so my granddaughter can come and start in the children's program. "

Katie Perry, 11, shares that anticipation. She says this branch is the best place to relax and read.

"There are a lot more books for my age range here. I found a lot more books to read here and it is bigger."

Branch Manager Carol Mars says the library lost more than 3,000 books. The Pascagoula Branch is holding a sidewalk book sale from 8am to 2pm this Tuesday and Wednesday to raise money for the library.
