Jackson County offers free hazardous waste disposal Saturday

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - It's easy to be "green" at Jackson County's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Saturday, April 24, the county will accept 40 different types of household hazardous chemicals ranging from anti-freeze to wood finish.  The hazardous waste will be disposed of properly at no cost to citizens.

Saturday's collection is from 8 a.m. - Noon at the Singing River Mall parking lot in Gautier.

"This will be the only hazardous collection day the County will hold in 2010," Ronda Powell, Jackson County's Solid Waste Coordinator explains. "We are looking for unwanted household products labeled- poisonous, toxic, flammable, or corrosive. This event is the best way to dispose of them safely and properly."

Rain or shine, the collection day will be at the east end of the mall's parking lot. The drop off line will begin on the north side of the mall. Drivers can use Dolphin Road off both Highway 90 and Gautier-Vancleave Road for the most convenient route.

"It's so easy, drivers never even have to get out of their vehicles," long time volunteer Alan Rose explains. "You just drive up, tell us what you've brought, and volunteers unload everything for you. It's the easiest way to be green, I've ever seen."

Before loading items in a vehicle, remember to keep products in the original containers. Make sure the containers are sealed and not leaking. Transport containers in the trunk or in the back of the vehicle away from passengers. As a safety precaution, don't transport more than five gallons or 50 pounds of hazardous items at one time.

"Bring us those left over chemicals that always seem to be hiding under your sink or in the back of your shed. This collection day is the ideal way to do some spring cleaning and be good to the environment," Powell said.

There are several items that will not be accepted including: electronic appliances, explosive or radioactive materials, medical or biological waste, business waste, household garbage or compressed cylinders. There is a five tire limit as well.
