LUCEDALE, MS (WLOX) - A fatal house fire in Lucedale Thursday night left two elderly women dead. The fire happened just before 10 p.m. on Lumpkin Street.
Burned pieces of windows, door frames and screens sit in the carport and back yard of the brick house in Lucedale.
According to State Fire Marshal Mitchell Mixon, the home belonged to 88-year-old Lemoyne Graham. She and her 76-year-old caretaker, Joyce Pitts, both died in the fire.
According to Mixon, the women's bodies were found in a bedroom. Investigators believe Pitts was trying to save Graham by pulling her out of the burning home.
Graham's neighbor, who has lived next to her for many years, said Graham's two sons and daughter have been at the home boarding up windows and doors.
According to Graham's neighbor, she taught Home Economics at George County High School for many years. Mixon said both women were outstanding citizens and this is a tremendous loss for the Lucedale community.
Mixon said the fire started near the carport. He does not expect the investigation to uncover any foul play, but the exact cause is not yet known.
