Legal sports betting is on the way to Mississippi. A federal law that outlawed sports betting everywhere except for a few states including Nevada was just struck down by the U.S.Supreme Court; and rightfully so. Whether you agree or not with any kind of gambling, the old law was plain unfair to other states.

In less time than it takes you to get ready for work each day, another person will die of an opioid overdose. On average four to five Americans die every hour in this epidemic. There is no doubt that the prescription medications that are designed to relieve human suffering are far too often killing people. People who often become addicted, overdose and die. Now we hear of major efforts to limit the prescriptions, to better train doctors, pharmacists and patients.

According to the study a person's quality of life is measured by both the natural environment, in which the state ranks well, and social environment.

The treatments are not cheap. It is top notch care for the little ones. But the reason, they can offer the care at no cost for the children is because of giving. One of the ways to give is to buy a $100 dollar ticket for the Dream Home giveaway.

74 years ago, a contingent of Marines was trapped on Guadalcanal facing annihilation. A painting illustrates a group of small boats evacuating the Marines. The man who volunteered to lead  the five Higgins boats and positioned himself and his boats in harm’s way to cover the withdrawal, was a signalman 1st class in the United States Coast Guard. Still two weeks from his 23rd birthday, Douglas A. Munro went above and beyond the call of duty.

Apparently the problem is so big that the city has a more than $3 million deficit.

The recent problems with Delta Airlines' computers that crippled the airline for hours and created scheduling problems for days is a sobering reminder of just how dependent we are on technology. As we enter the heart of the hurricane season, August to October, when the vast majority of major hurricanes occur, we need to make sure we are prepared in case a storm interrupts our dependency on technology effecting everything.

New teachers in the Pascagoula-Gautier School district recently took a course on shaking those 1st day jitters when school starts back next month.  We may wonder why a teacher would be nervous. After all, they are in charge of the classroom. They have the authority over those students. But maybe the best teachers are always a little nervous; because they are in charge.  In charge of helping to shape young people into productive citizens.

Now our neighbors in Louisiana have declared assaults on law enforcement officers "hate crimes" that carry additional sentences.
