Opioid abuse is a serious health issue. Drug overdose is the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin, Percocet, morphine, and heroin are driving factors in the increase in deaths. Many addicts get prescriptions from friends or family who are legitimately receiving these prescriptions. Sadly, many people don't realize by providing these legally prescribed drugs they are enabling the addiction.

Insured damages from tornadoes that struck the Hattiesburg and Petal area in January could reach $100 million. So far, insurance companies are paying out tens of millions of dollars in claims.  And the federal government is stepping in with grants and loans.  But there are still plenty of people who still need help.

It's Halloween time again. In neighborhoods across America, children will don costumes and hit the streets going door to door announcing to home dwellers "trick or treat."  For the little ones there are no real tricks, only treats.  Some experts estimate that one quarter of all candy sold annually in the U.S. is purchased at Halloween.

Mississippi Secretary of state Delbert Hosemann appears to be standing in the way of a plan for Margaritaville to develop vacant land for an amusement park. The reason? It's not a casino. The state stands to gain more tidelands land lease dollars from a casino than from a family oriented facility.

The long list of events on the Mississippi Gulf Coast just got a little longer. A running festival is set for December 9 through 11, including a marathon that is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Our congratulations to the organizers of the December event as it draws runners from across the United States to our area. We welcome the marathon runners and the expected $1.5 million economic impact.

Critical care just got better in South Mississippi. The addition of a medical helicopter based at the Ocean Springs Hospital for emergency air transport is welcomed. Singing River Health System teamed up with Ochsner Health Care to provide this service.  Basing the flight in Ocean Springs certainly reduces the response time, if air transport is needed for critically ill or injured patients.

Now our neighbors in Louisiana have declared assaults on law enforcement officers "hate crimes" that carry additional sentences.
