GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A local organization is throwing its support behind sending millions of federal dollars for Katrina recovery to the Port of Gulfport. The Gulfport Main Street Association passed a resolution supporting Governor Haley Barbour's plan to use $570 million in CDBG money to expand the port.
Board president Eddie Appel says the association believes the expansion of the port is vital for the coast to make a full recovery.
He said, "The port expansion will set the stage for the Coast's future growth as a place for families to work and live, and as a destination for visitors and tourists."
A lawsuit was filed in December that challenged the use of CDBG money to pay for port improvements. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say the money should have been used to build affordable housing instead.
