The big story in the WLOX Newsroom Tuesday was a very happy one. News Anchor Rebecca Powers gave birth to her first child, a healthy little girl. Proud papa Ben Powers tells us that Mary Alexandra weighed in at eight pounds, 14 ounces.More >>
Rebecca Powers is the co-anchor for the WLOX News at 6:00 and 10:00pm.
She began her career in broadcasting at WDSU in New Orleans as an intern in the newsroom in 1996. That's where she was when WLOX News called to ask her to produce First News, now known as the 4 O'Clock Show .
She worked behind the scenes on that show for a few years before becoming an on-air morning personality for WCPR-FM – a local alternative rock radio station. When Good Morning Mississippi anchor Rhonda Weidner took time off to have a baby, Rebecca filled in for her. She also filled in for former WLOX News anchor Miyoka Broussard when she had a baby. Both experiences were positive for Rebecca, and it didn't take long for her to realize she also wanted to be a WLOX News anchor.
Rebecca is the youngest of six and grew up in New Orleans but loves South Mississippi. "I enjoy the community togetherness around here," she says. "The small town feel with big city conveniences really appeals to me."
When she's not reporting or anchoring The News for South Mississippi, she spends time with her family and friends in New Orleans. She can also be found strumming her guitars, writing songs, or spending time with her dog and cat. Sometimes you can see her playing in a rock band around town. She has even released an album of her music. Rebecca is married and has two children, a daughter and a son.
