For more than a decade, Al Showers has covered the news in Hancock and Pearl River Counties for WLOX. In fact, he's so well known in the community that the other reporters say when they cover stories on South Mississippi's "West Coast" they're always asked, "Where's Al?"
Al's close community ties were strengthened ever more during Hurricane Katrina. He rode out the storm with other county emergency officials in Bay St. Louis. At one point during the height of the storm, the folks at the EOC building thought they might not make it out alive. Using a permanent marker, they all wrote numbers on their arms, just in case they had to be identified later. Luckily, everyone in the building made it out alive.
Since then, Al has been more than just a reporter, he's become an ambassador for his storm-ravaged community. Working with The Giving Circle, he's traveled to Saratoga Springs, NY several times to tell the story of Hancock County's devastation and recovery. He even served as King for the city's first ever Mardi Gras parade, which also helped raise money for and awareness about our local storm recovery.
Like so many others in Hancock County, Al lost his home during Katrina and is currently still living in a FEMA trailer. Thanks to help from volunteers, he is slowly rebuilding his home in Bay St. Louis.
