St. Patrick Linebacker Ian Magandy named WLOX Def. Player of the Year

Ian Magandy wore jersey number one and for a good reason, he led the Mississippi Gulf Coast with 158 solo tackles, that's solo tackles. Coach Joe Rocconi says he doesn't count assist.

The St. Patrick senior linebacker played in only 9 games and because of his stellar efforts on the football turf, he's this year's WLOX Defensive Player of the Year.

Magandy said, "I have a nose for the ball. Our defense matched up against their offense and I just did what I was suppose to do.

Rocconi added, "He is the complete package in my book. He's really got it all. I think where it starts is his commitment, his work ethic and of course that is what has made him great. He's been blessed with God-given talent but he's made most of those talents by the way he works during the off-season."

Besides his 158 solo tackles Magandy had six sacks, 8 quarterback hurries, 7 forced fumbles and 3 blocked pat's.

Ian played running back and rushed for 161 yards on 35 carries with 3 touchdowns and grabbed 8 receptions for 62 yards and 1 touchdown.

When it comes to Division one schools...Coach Rocconi says Mississippi State wants Magandy to work on, Ole Miss still has Ian on their recruiting list, as does Louisiana-Lafayette and Samford.

Rocconi said, "They're going to be regretting it in the future I promise you because he's a diamond.

Magandy stated, "I can bring a whole new atmosphere, I hope. I'm not boasting but I'm saying what I will do and I will help the team out.

Mississippi Gulf Coast and Hinds Community College have both offered Magandy a football scholarship.

Rocconi closed by saying, "He's the best kid I've coached and been around and we're sure going to miss him next year.

WLOX will name the Offensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.
