BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Senators have rejected a proposal that could have increased the minimum wage in Louisiana. Supporters say a wage increase would help the working poor in a state known for its poverty. Business organizations say it would lead to job losses and higher prices for goods and services.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Entergy's first-quarter net income more than doubled. The power company benefited from a cold winter. Entergy earned $401.2 million, or $2.24 per share. That's up sharply from $161.4 million, or 90 cents per share, a year earlier.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Police say an elevator repairman has found the skeletal remains of a man inside an unoccupied apartment building in the Central City neighborhood. Nearby residents say the building was heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Investigators are working to identify the body and cause of death.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival begins a two-weekend run tomorrow. The 45th annual festival will be held at the Fair Grounds Race Course, its home since 1972. And in keeping with its roots in Louisiana culture, there will be numerous jazz, gospel and zydeco performances. The festival began in 1970.
