AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Former longtime secretary of the Alabama state Senate McDowell Lee has died at age 89. His daughter Margaret Cunningham says Lee died yesterday afternoon after a brief illness at his home in Auburn. Lee served as a secretary of the state senate for 47 years before retiring in 2010.

BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - A Talladega County man has pleaded guilty in his mother's 2011 shooting death. In court, 19-year-old Drew Thacker of Oak Grove said he was suffering withdrawal symptoms from heroin before the shootings and was angry that his parents recently kicked his brother out of the house.

BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - Bessemer police say an inmate accused of stabbing a man and kidnapping his wife has been found dead in the city jail. Police say the 26-year-old inmate hanged himself in his cell early yesterday morning. The inmate's identity hasn't been released. Authorities say the stabbing victim is expected to recover.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Previously unreleased recordings of country music legend Hank Williams performing songs on a 1950 radio show will be released next month for download and on vinyl. "The Garden Spot Programs, 1950" features 24 songs and jingles from a taped show that aired on early country radio stations.
