PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - The Russell County Sheriff's Office has turned a half-acre of jail property into a thriving summer garden, tended to by a group of female inmates. The crops go to area shelters, food banks and churches. The garden got underway about six weeks ago, in a lot behind the jail that had been bare grass.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Montgomery police are investigating a pair of killings over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Police said 22-year-old Ronald James of Montgomery was found with a gunshot wound shortly after 3 o'clock in the morning Saturday. Later, police and medics found 38-year-old Darrell Chillous of Millbrook with a gunshot wound. Police said no arrests have been made in either case.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say at least 40 rounds were fired during a gun battle outside a Birmingham motorcycle club that killed two people and wounded two others. Birmingham police said the shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, outside the Showstoppers Motorcycle Club.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A proposed change to the Alabama Constitution would make gun ownership a fundamental right in the state. The proposal also would subject any state gun-control measures to the toughest review by the courts.
