JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -
Hundreds packed Woolworth Chapel on the Tougaloo College campus to honor some well known Civil Right's heroes.
Five busloads of Freedom Riders participated in a memorial service for Freedom Riders who have passed away.
The Freedom Riders rode into Jackson on buses in the summer of 1961 to fight segregation in the deep south.
In addition to recognizing those leaders who have died, Monday's service at Tougaloo College was a time for many of the Freedom Riders to bask in the progress they fought for.
"To see some of the progress that we've made, even though we have so much more to do, the challenge and effort that the Freedom Riders went about not only changed this nation, but this town as well and this state as well, we see the affects of that in just watching people like yourselves doing the things you're doing," Freedom Rider Reginald Green said.
In addition to students from Tougaloo College, students from across the country also traveled to attended Monday's service.
