D'Iberville firefighters reach out to help storm victims

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

A group of D'Iberville firefighters are hoping to fill up many baskets of relief supplies for tornado victims in Greene County and beyond.  They are already off to a good start, with food, supplies and even stuffed toys being dropped off.

After seeing the twister's devastation in Greene County, they had to act. Jay Williams is a training officer.

"That's our starting point," Williams said.  "We're going to do what we can for Greene, then we're going to keep moving throughout the state because there's more flooded areas, and there's more tornado areas."

Just then, Carol Watkins arrived at the fire station. She doesn't have a lot of money, but she does have a lot of heart.

"I heard about it on TV, and I didn't have any extra money, so I said I know I have extra food, and they can always use food."

The firefighters are challenging you to do the same, come to the rescue of those who need help the most.  It's an easy thing to do.

Joel Mayfield is another training officer.

"We're trying to help others, trying to get them some of the supplies they need, stuff they probably lost during the storm," Mayfield said. "We're going to try and help them out to get the stuff back that they need to go on with their lives."

When you ask these firefighters why they are making this very generous gesture toward their fellow man, the tornado victims in Mississippi and Alabama, the answer is very simple. It's just what they do, according to Williams.

"Firefighters are bred for one thing, and that's to help the public. And that's what we're doing," Williams said.  "You don't have to be a local public. We're going to help everybody.

That help will go a long way towards helping Greene County and other areas recover more quickly.

The first group of D'Iberville firefighters will leave for Greene County on Monday loaded with the relief supplies. They will continue collecting items for the rest of this month, and hope to make several more trips.

The station is located on Big Ridge Road in D'Iberville.
