Don't toss that Christmas tree: Recycle it

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Christmas has come and gone, leaving us with lasting memories and bare Christmas trees. But there's one last gift you can give, and this one is green.

"Even without its lights and decorations, your old Christmas tree is still beautiful to us," said Ronda Powell, Jackson County's Solid Waste Director. "Instead of just throwing the tree away, give it to us."

The biggest benefit of recycling Christmas trees is saving space in our local landfills and discouraging illegal dumping. Jackson County turns all the old trees into mulch for public parks and ball fields.

The recycling is already underway in Harrison County at the following locations:

  • Parking bay (Rodenberg Avenue and Hwy 90, Biloxi)
  • Ken Combs Pier parking lot (Courthouse Road and Hwy 90, Gulfport)
  • Mississippi Power Plant Watson (Lorraine Road, Gulfport)
  • Parking bay (Jeff Davis Avenue and Hwy 90, Long Beach)
  • West Harbor parking area (Pass Christian Harbor, Hwy 90)
  • County Work Center (Hwy 67, Woolmarket)

Before dropping off your tree, be sure to remove ornaments, lights, tree stands, nails and other metal attachments. Artificial trees are not accepted.

Jackson County's tree recycling program begins on Monday, January 3, at six locations: ·

  • Jackson County Landfill (10501 Seaman Road, Vancleave)
  • Central Road Barn (Ballpark Road, Vancleave)
  • East Road Barn (Hwy 63, Escatawpa)
  • Food Tiger Parking Lot (Hwy 614, Hurley)
  • St. Andrews Fire Station (Elm Street, St. Andrews Community)
  • JC Fairgrounds (2902 Shortcut Road, Pascagoula)

"We are going to collect trees throughout January to make sure everyone has time to take part," Powell said.
