Christmas Bird Count underway in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Coast Audubon Society is participating in Audubon's annual Christmas Bird Count. Birders participating in the count will be sent to different locations in Hancock County to count and document various species of birds.

The survey, which runs from December 14th until January 5th, is the longest running Citizen science survey in the world and takes place in all 50 states. Last year there were more than 2,100 counts in which people tallied 2,319 species and over 55 million birds.

"The Christmas Bird Count is all about the power of Citizen Science," said Geoff LeBaron, Director of Audubon's Christmas Bird Count. "Our theme is 'I Count' because the work of tens of thousands of volunteers, extending over a century, really adds up."

The count is used by scientists to better understand how birds and the environment are fairing or what needs to be done to protect them. The CBC has been used to identify endangered species and also to document rising numbers of previously endangered species.
