Ancient Indian burial ground and artifacts discovered

Posted: Updated:

ROLLING FORK, MS (WLBT)- Ancient Indian artifacts have been discovered off of U.S. Highway 61 north. Construction crews were excavating a 33-acre construction site for the U.S. army corps of engineers when they happened upon an extensive Indian burial ground in Rolling Fork.

Archaeologist Chris Koeppel and his team unearthed preserved stone tools, pottery and other remains dating back to the 1300s.

Koeppel said that if a village was at that location they would have buried their dead there as well. The army corps of engineers does not want to disturb the burial ground so they have met with local leaders of the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes to work out construction details.
