HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Hancock County Tourism Development Bureau launched a new tourism promotion this month giving qualified travelers free $25 Magnolia Money shopping vouchers to spend at participating retailers.

Over 60 Hancock County restaurants, merchants and businesses are accepting the $5 vouchers at face value from now until October 30th. The "Magnolia Money" vouchers are provided to qualified motor coach visitors and awarded to some visitors who register online.

"We randomly select ten lucky winners each week to win free 'Magnolia Money,'" said Executive Director of the Hancock County Tourism Development Bureau Beth Carriere. "We'll also giveaway 'Magnolia Money' to out-of-town guests attending our Hancock County events such as Crusin the Coast."

Bob and Karen Leslie, from New Haven, Missouri, bought lunch at the Butter Cup Café and lawn ornaments at Twin Light Creations with their Magnolia Money.

"We really enjoyed our visit and plan to return," said Leslie. This has been a real hit, a win-win for Old Town," said Twin Light Creations shop owner Pam Collins. "We had more than thirty people come in and spend their own money on top of their free money on Wednesday morning. These people had never been to Old Town before and said that they would be back for our Second Saturday Artwalk coming up this weekend," said Collins.

"Businesses from Old Town Bay St. Louis to Waveland to Diamondhead are benefiting from this program," said Carriere. "Retailers return the vouchers to our office with the proper documentation and we pay them."

The purpose of the "Magnolia Money" program is designed to promote business through tourism in Hancock County. The program is one of several tourism related programs pre-approved and funded by BP.

Registration for Hancock County businesses interested in participating in the program ends Friday, September 10, 2010.

The Hancock County Tourism Development Bureau is dedicated to working with area businesses for the betterment of our Gulf coast community including Bay St. Louis, Waveland, and Diamondhead, Mississippi.
