Why Mr. President?

Dear Mr. President,

The images from New Orleans on August 29, 2005 were horrible. None of us will ever forget the people trapped in the Superdome. And we cringe every time we think about the families begging for help on their roofs. But what we'll also never forget is that New Orleans' Katrina nightmare was the direct result of a manmade mishap along the city's levees.

If the levees would have held, New Orleans would have been spared much of its mess. Apparently, you need to be reminded again that Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in U.S. History, paralyzed south Mississippi. Ground zero was in the Magnolia state, not the bayou state.

Yet, you're spending the fifth anniversary of Katrina in New Orleans, and not in Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, D'Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Moss Point or Pascagoula. Those are the cities that got torn apart by Katrina's winds and her storm surge, and not by a manmade mistake.

All we want to know Mr. President is why? Why shine a light on New Orleans when you could be spotlighting the real heroes of Katrina. The good people of Mississippi are getting tired of New Orleans being the face of Katrina.

On the fifth anniversary of the monstrous hurricane, you should come here, to south Mississippi, and celebrate how far we've come, with the people who continue to roll up their sleeves and rebuild our communities bigger and better.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
