OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The City of Ocean Springs has reopened its beaches after the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality determined that the substance found Monday is not petroleum based.
Front and East beaches were briefly closed Monday afternoon following a recommendation from MDEQ and the Beach Monitoring Task Force that the public avoid contact with oil-related materials.
A few scattered tar balls estimated to be the size of a quarter were sighted. As a precaution, city officials advise citizens not to handle the tar balls.
